Dugit tank ambush
In February 15, 2003, an Israeli tank went over an 100 kg. explosive devise planted on the side of the road leding to the settlement of Dugit, in the northern part of Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. The tank went up in flames, killing its crew consisting of an officer and three soldiers. A second explosive was discovered by Israeli troops and safely defused.
Palestinian Hamas movement claimed to have carried out the attack as a revenge for the killing of two of its members earlier in the week. According to Palestinian sources the tank was a Merkava but according to Israeli sources the destroyed tank was a Magach 7, a rebuilt Patton tank.
